I can't believe Iowa is going back to the dark ages. I am so glad that when my daughter became a single mom in her 20s that she at least had the option open to her if she felt she needed it. There are a myriad of reasons of how and why girls become pregnant at different ages and phases of life. For men to impose their will on women is ludicrous. Not only this but a lot of things going on in Iowa makes me almost embarrassed to admit that I am born and raised here. I know what the Bible says about killing but ultimately I haven't walked a mile in the shoes of these women. I believe that whatever we do here on this earth good and bad, will be judged by only One Person and no one else has the right to rule other peoples lives arbitrarily. I also think the men should be forced to step up and help parent and pay for the child and not go on their merry way. Girls sleep around and they are sluts and whores. Guys sleep around and "it's different". Can't believe the double standard still exists in the 21st Century.

I am enraged. This decision is hailed as "pro- life" by the same conservative followers who refused to mask and vaccinate against a deadly communicable virus. This is about power and control over women, minorities, and other vulnerable groups. 😢

I have 2 things to say. Here’s the first:

Rates of maternal death in the United States are disturbingly high. The most recent US maternal mortality ratio of 17.4 per 100,000 pregnancies represents approximately 660 maternal deaths in 2018. This ranks the US LAST among industrialized countries. Causes of death vary widely, with death from hemorrhage most likely during pregnancy and at the time of birth. The maternal death ratio for Black women (37.1 per 100,000 pregnancies) is 2.5 times the ratio for Caucasian women (14.7) and three times the ratio for Hispanic women (11.8). (From The Common Wealth Fund)

And here’s the second:

The treatment for an “ectopic” pregnancy (arising from a fertilized egg that implants outside the uterus, usually in a fallopian tube) is abortion.

The treatment for a “septic” (infected) uterus is abortion.

The treatment for a miscarriage that your body won't release is abortion. (The alternative is carrying a dead fetus in one’s body for the duration of the pregnancy which means the woman is likely to develop an infection from a foreign body in her uterus.) Google: Savita Halappanavar or search for her in the New York Times.

The treatment for “preeclampsia” (arising from high blood pressure, diabetes, kidney disease, and lupus whether developed during pregnancy or pre-existing a pregnancy) is abortion.

If you can't get those abortions, you die.

You. Die.

It is really surprising and disgusting to me that the crazies who want an ABSOLUTE ban on abortion don’t know about these possible complications of pregnancy requiring an abortion. Or don’t care.

And here’s the third. (I can’t count)

A parisitic twin that develops during pregnancy will leave the dominant twin with extra limbs or unrecognizable protrusions. It will suffer from severe health problems from the efforts of supporting the parasitic twin. In addition, supporting a parasitic twin can put enormous strain on the dominant twin’s heart. Abortion is advised.

I know a young Catholic woman who had this rare condition during her first pregnancy. Her parents and husband supported her decision to get an abortion. Doctors advised it because of the complications of delivery which could affect her ability to have more children. They also told her the dominant twin, once born, would have gross unrecognizable protrusions from its body or extra limbs and likely would not survive very long.

This issue has been politicized, particularly by those in the party that espouses “personal freedom” and “small government.” This decision also highlights the inconsistency of when that political party says things should be federal vs. state determined. Remember last year’s controversy about CA confinement meat products laws not being “fair” to Iowa livestock producers?

I foresee the development of modern day “underground railroads” (not so underground, actually) that will electronically identify resources and assistance for those needing abortion health services in order to help them receive these services in other states.

Today's Supreme Court decision overturns what even Ruth Bader Ginsburg warned was a a decision that was ill-framed and rushed through the Court. RBG. who of course was a prominent proponent of women's rights, frequently criticized Roe v. Wade.

Also, today's decision does not end abortion rights for women. It transfers responsibility for enacting abortion laws from the federal government to the states, where we can help shape the legislation., whether we are pro-life or pro-choice advocates.

We never had a constitutional right to abortion because of the uniqueness of the issue, namely, the cessation of human life.

My hope and prayer is that this issue does not become one more that is politicized, and contributes to the erosion of the institutions that are democracy. We need to come together and listen to one another so that we can move forward and solve the many serious problems that are tearing us apart.

IMHO, this decision will likely be the biggest legacy of the corrupt former president.

I am livid. Our fundamental right to make decisions about our own bodies has been taken away and I fear other rights are in jeopardy. What ever happened to the separation of church and state? It feels like we are in the dark ages when the religious, oh sorry that's been replaced by conservatives, rule in the name of following the law. Whose Law? For whom? Yes, VOTE but more than that. It's not over.

They lied (about Roe v Wade being the law of the land and they would always support the law of the land), they cheated (refusing to bring Merrick Garland's nomination to the floor for a vote), and they won by outright stealing a seat with the Amy Coney Barrett nomination. That is the legacy of the republican party and this court. The way to change all of this - STOP.VOTING.FOR.REPUBLICANS. Your vote matters. Elections have consequences. Please vote in November.

Of course it matters. For the first time in the 235-year history of the United States Constitution, the Supreme Court has taken away from American citizens a constitutional right. As Justice Clarence Thomas warned in writing, all of the other individual rights that flow from the fundamental right to privacy are also threatened. It also needs to be pointed out that Senator Chuck Grassley is personally responsible for the overturning of Roe v. Wade. The decision to overturn Roe was a 5 to 4 decision. If Grassley had not personally blocked Merrick Garland from joining the Supreme Court, Roe would not have been overturned. Grassley owns this decision. He needs to be held responsible this November for that decision.

Grassley also needs to own the fact that Justice Amy Coney Barrett, Justice Brett Kavanaugh, and Justice Neil Gorsuch lied during their Senate confirmation hearing. He was instrumental in their confirmations. Given who nominated them, perhaps we should not be too surprised that they are liars.

I am stunned. I held some form of false hope that SCOTUS would not try to take women back to the last century. I was wrong. I fear for my daughters and granddaughters and can only hope that their struggle to regain women's rights and to retain women's rights is as successful as ours once was.

I've seen several women, from states that almost certainly will keep abortion legal, offer help with travel, lodging, etc. - resurrecting the Jane Collective of pre-Roe days...

Caught (1949) - Barbara Bel Geddes, James Mason, Robert Ryan, Frank Ferguson, et al.

Wide-eyed and poor young Leonora (Barbara Bel Geddes) weds an obsessive millionaire named Ohlrig (Robert Ryan), but the marriage is loveless. Even worse, Ohlrig seems to have manic, violent tendencies. Eventually, young Leonora escapes her unhappy life and begins working with New York City doctor Larry Quinada (James Mason), who she soon falls for. Unfortunately, Ohlrig refuses to grant his wife a divorce, and things get even darker for Leonora when she realizes she's pregnant with his child.

I am horrified and yet not surprised. The minority rules the majority in the US at this point. I agree totally that they lied, cheated and won. Without the lies and cheating they couldn't win. Next they want to nullify our votes. This is not the state I grew up in. I think the USA has never really been all it claimed to be, but it seems like this is an historic low point between abortion rights being taken away, gun "rights" more sacred than just about anything else, January 6, and on and on. I thought it was awful when Donald Trump was elected, but it has ended up to be more of a nightmare than imagined.
