Happy New Year. I hope you are well now. Too bad about the COVID-19 hitting you. Take care. I had COVID last Feb. 22 on my 80th birthday. I had had an early Birthday party on Feb. 19th with 60 people so I did not miss a party. Yesterday we went to a brunch. Our friend has to cancel her party because she got COVID-19 for the second time. She had all her shots and did get ill for 10 days and did take medications. So the party was Jan. 6th. I helped clear the tables. She said when we all left she was heading for a nap so still not OK. She still had her Christmas tree up and decorations. Have a great 2024. You can dance in your living room with your wonderful husband. Take care. Come visit Arizona Palm Creek. We have many dances here. Happy Sunday to you. We are having wind, rain and clouds today. There is a baseball game going. I do not know if they will play in the rain. Ever Onward.

I certainly empathize with you. I was feeling not great on December 20 and decided to go to the doctor the next day. I tested positive for influenza type A. Because we were planning on getting together with our family, out of abundance of caution my husband got tested and he was positive as well. He had no symptoms, but I’ve been really sick. I can’t imagine how sick I would be had I not gotten a flu vaccine. So there went our Christmas celebration as well as my birthday and our 55th anniversary celebrations on the 28th. We kept our positive attitudes and FaceTimed; we were able to get together with some of our kids and grandkids by the 30th.

Since reading your “dancing” piece, I thought of our New Years Eves in Iowa. Did you or Richard ever go to Sara and Luther Hill’s for a New Year’s Eve party? We were part of the Simpson contingent invited over several years. What an elegant party! Such lovely memories for us.

Get better!

Thanks for responding. I didn't attend an event at the Hills, but Richard might have. I'll ask,

Happy and Healthy New Year Julie. I hope you and your husband get that evasive negative test soon and the virus hasn’t been too hard on you. There is so much of it going around right now. I applaude you for being considerate enough to pass on what I am sure was a wonderful evening to protect the other attendees. Sadly not everyone is doing that.

Thanks, Carole. The morning I started feeling symptoms - like a cold - I had a haircut scheduled for 9 a.m. It’s hard to get into see her, so I did not want to cancel. But I thought I better test - she is older with health issues, and we had company the night before I wanted to make sure wouldn’t be impacted, too. Our friends had holiday travel plans, and I didn’t want them to get sick while traveling. I realize I had a millisecond of a thought about going ahead with the haircut - assuming it was a cold - before realizing I had to be responsible. I’m sure these decisions are made or ignored by a lot of folks. It’s probably time to wear masks again at all times.

Hard decisions. My neighbor thought she just had a headache and sore throat for 3 days before testing, which was positive. I sat beside her at Drake games each of those 3 days because she knew it was nothing. Thankfully I didn’t get sick as I was leaving for TX in 6 days. I thought I would have to rebook. I think the vax booster I received 2 wks earlier may have helped. Hope you feel better very soon.

I am so sorry that you’ve tested positive for Covid. I hope you’re feeling well soon. Thank you so much for sharing your reminiscences; I totally relate. Not being able to dance for me reflected on my authenticity as a Black person. People would shake their heads at me as in disbelief when I was on the dance floor. Born and raised in Des Moines, I have lived in Denver, Little Rock, NYC and Atlanta (short list). When people would see that I could NOT dance, though, I tried, without fail, they would say, “oh, she’s from Iowa.”

Oh, that is so funny! She’s from Iowa!

Add that to the list:

1. I grew up on a farm.

2. It depends.

Loved your reminiscences of trying to dance. Phil and I, HS sweethearts, took dancing lessons together. We stayed committed through the 2 Step and the waltz but when we got to the jitter bug (we're talking the mid-1950s) and neither of us could master the movements, we gave up.

Phil likes to remember that it was because we both wanted to lead but as I remember it no one taught him how to lead. At least, for me, I need someone who knows how to lead me and I don't have to guess what my dancing partner is going to do next.

Needless to say we don't dance to this day.

It's nice to know someone I admire so much can't dance either. (Smile.)

Happy New Year, Julie!

I think we would all be better off if we shared our inadequacies.

I so appreciate your desire to gather, albeit, without dancing.. but Covid holding you back. We avoided it for 3.5 yrs only to get it from a family member that went to a restaurant.. end of Nov. so we are staying away from all gatherings... again.. but you can still dance at home with only your joy being your company!
