Loved this..in radio we kept a drawer full of 🌲 evergreens that could be used on a fallow newsday..especially holidays when we didn't have a full complement of reporters. Yes..little A.M. stations could have a news director and 4 or so full time reporters and several parttime..glory days!
Thanks for your take. I haven’t run a year in review because I’m still grinding through year-end stuff. But if I do, hopefully some of my more recent supporters might enjoy some of my previous content they missed.😉 Have a great holiday.
Merry Christmas and thanks for the writing. Interesting reading. We love to hear your remarks. Have a joyous time of year and write a great story. Yes pray for peace in Ukraine and the area. Let there be peace on Christmas week.
I wholeheartedly agree with your disdain for the Chipmunk Song. It came out when I was 7 and since my last name was close enough to the creator's pseudonym, my classmates decided *I* was Alvin. 64 years later, I still occasionally (too often) hear about it.
Richard - I enjoyed the SH*T you said about the holidays. I have fond memories as a high school student with a part-time job as the sports photographer for the Laurens Sun. I never got to see my name under the pics. It just read Sun Shot!
I had hoped that my book would be out for the holidays but unfortunately the people the distribute the published books are having trouble with my title “You Can’t Make This $#!+ Up” hope it gets resolved. Who knew symbols could be a problem in a title.
In what constitutes a newspaper in Monticello, year round they miss most of what constitutes real news for drivel coming from the city council and chamber of commerce. Every drunk gets home safely since they only rate the courthouse news on the fines they pay or the time in jail they spend. No accidents ever rate a photo, no barn fire gets a shot, and all the old coorespondents who tried, were let go. Fifty years from now if a genealogist is looking for someone, all they are going to find is his or her bowling scores if they are lucky!
Nicely done Richard. In radio, sometimes we rehash a story from earlier in the week, if it is still an event coming up (e.g., Chamber ugly Christmas Sweater night. Breaking news helps, but the press release I just got from the sheriff is remarkably vague, and I'll spend all morning waiting for a follow-up to my text, if I ever get one, but he is, in general responsive.
The only thing worse than filler copy over Christmas is having a huge story where everybody has to come to work, like a blizzard. That’s happened once or twice. (Perhaps Alvin should be added to the list of “he who shall not be named”. A lonely little club of two who have to listen to each other all day every day.)
A big blizzard also helps fill news hole! The weather always is safer to cover (or used to be) than politics. Agreed on Alvin. Give me Dean’s “Marshmallow World.”
Enjoyed the article!

I agree with your take Alvin and the Yada Yada Yada............... The only problem is that I cannot get this song out of my head now!
Merry Christmas to you and Julie!!
No to either Alvin and the Chipmunks and Grandma Got Run Over by a Reindeer

I haven't heard any version of "Grandma Got Run Over By a Reindeer". Thank God.
So made my day!!!!

Very good! How about Felix Navidad? 😜
You do realize, henceforth any of your readers will think of you whenever they hear that song? Come to think of it, that's appropriate!
