Thank you, Richard. You inspired me to reopen the copy of the Bowermaster book on my shelf.

Sadly, Robert Ray Republicans are an endangered species.

Agree with all the intelligent, insightful and memorable comments, but the most remarkable feature of Richard's Sh*t is the photo. Thank you for sharing.

Richard, I’m pleased my column played a small part in inspiring yours. Great lesson from Governor Ray about wisdom and restraint. We sure do miss him, although I suspect today’s GOP would run right over him for being too soft, or caring too much about immigrants, or getting along with Democrats.

Great stories of a sadly bygone day, Richard. Love the Buddy Holly look.

Richard always has great stories and insights. The photo is truly wonderful. September 26 is, I believe, the 95th anniversary of the Governor's birth. It would be marvelous if there could be a PotLuck to share stories about him. I am especially pleased that the Robert D. Ray Iowa SHARES Humanitarian Award, that I created to help preserve his legacy, will be presented on September 7 at the Iowa Hunger Summit at the World Food Prize Hall of Laureates. The recipient will be announced soon.

Great idea, Ken! A zoom call for former staffers of Governor Robert D Ray!

Governor Ray had a heart for human beings. He was able to govern with logic and wisdom. How far the Iowa Republican leadership has fallen in the decades since. Can you imagine the current governor welcoming refugees the way Ray did? Can you imagine the current governor thinking through the ramifications of a strong-arm decision and then thinking the better of it? I mourn what's happened and continues to happen in our once-great state under the current governor.

Thank you for reminding us about days of decency in Iowa politics.

I like that picture as well!!

Great story Richard. Thanks. Too bad Ray's advise would never be followed by the Reynolds or Trump Administration.

Wonderful piece. And I agree with Richard--while my focus was on whether this Texas deployment is an allowable use of federal funds, a more pertinent question is "should we be doing this?" And Richard is certainly correct that there are more constructive ways to battle drug trafficking.
