Carvana is to brick and mortar auto dealers as the Internet is to brick and mortar newspapers. Carvana's stock ended today at $59.65 down from $376.83 on 8/10/21. Buying Adesa was a bad move.

Love what you said about car dealers. Not to mention they will lie to you & say they didn't say what they did 2 days ago. Plus, I am not a good game player. I have to bring Ryan along to do that. I just don't have the patience. Ry on the other hand, gets a kick out of it. Of course, he knows he will always come out on top!

Julie, I'm still driving my little piece of garbage EV from 2015. I still have the Chevy Spark EV that I bought for $26,500 less tax credits! It's working great! Very few problems and always corrected quickly, easily, and for free. I've spent almost nothing in 7 years -- free charging, free maintenance, and of course it doesn't need oil changes or new brakes.

Elon may have "disputed" the auto industry but he didn't invent the EV. GM did. Nor is it the only option out there now. There are so many great options from the inexpensive Chevy Bolt to the Mustang Mach-E.

Before his Twitter situation, I've disliked him for his misleading statements about his company stock that lead to SEC punishments. He's never run a profitable business until about a year ago -- and Tesla is only profitable because of gov't subsidies. Not against the subsidies, and just saying that's not a long term strategy. Again, time will tell if he can ever generate profits with his disruptions.

Ditch the Tesla and jump on the GM EV bandwagon. You won't regret it.

Love it! I've heard nothing but good things about Carvana from people who've had the same experience. Way to go, thanks for another great article.....loved your response, too, "News you can use". You are SO good at that.

Fun to read about Carvana. Your paragraph about buying at a dealership described our day yesterday, not buying a car, but 2 phones and 2 ipads at a neighborhood Verizon. We were forced to update to 5G. It took 4 hours, with calling several managers, trading in old phones, upselling offers, on and on—so surreal, I can’t begin to describe the process. We should have ordered online, but wanted to support the store across the street.

Wow! This is a fantastic way to buy and sell! I recently decided to buy a new Prius Prime and trade in my Prius V. After a half hour talk with a very knowledgeable sales WOMAN at Wilson Toyota in Ames, I was told it would be an 18 month wait to get a new car! Or I could pay an additional $10,000 (yes) and they might be able to get one from the east coast states. Nope.

I had never heard of Carvana before, so thanks for the article. Are they only in DSM? Interesting to read you decided to get rid of your Tesla (I had read your previous report about the braking issue). Do you think you will be getting another EV? It’s too bad our Iowa politicians have chosen to singularly focus on ethanol, to the exclusion of electric technology - powered by domestically produced (and increasingly renewable) energy. Keep us posted about your vehicle adventures!

Julie,

Saw the truck in the lot and first thought Cherie was making good on her threat to dispose of my beloved farm truck. Whew!

“A software update notice came in yesterday, but by then it was too late.”

Did the notice claim the problem was fixed?

Carvana recently purchased Adesa Auto Auctions for $2.2B. Car dealers compete with Carvana at auction for vehicles. The purchase is causing a mass exodus of dealers to Manheim (a dealer auction competitor). In 2021 Adesa had $800M revenue.
