Thank you for this piece, and for your previous dispatch. I've never visited Hawaii but have learned a lot. Rooting for that banyan!

Again, I repeat, from an earlier conversation we had; you should write a book. You are very thoughtful, wise and gifted.

Great reporting. I have never visited Hawaii, but I have followed this story closely. Very sad, but I am pleased there are some green shoots.

Kathi, thank you for your first and second report both beautifully described. It was particularly touching and hopeful to see how everyone is coming together and that the tree has signs of life.

Even from so far away in Iowa, I can feel the resilience of the Hawaiian people. It is the aloha spirit that envelopes the islands. I've been to Oahu three times and that spirit took in my heart and keeps it.

There are two animal rescues that deserve attention too. The Maui Humane Society needs money to support all the pets and strays that are rescued from the fire ravaged areas. I am amazed at the number of pets who survived the fire.

I have also donated to The Neighborhood Cats that is helping to support the Maui caretakers of the feral/community cats. Those caretakers have lost everything as well, yet they continue to look for and care for their wild charges.

I hope the people of Hawaii feel the aloha spirit from us back in Iowa, who care about them and can send the aloha spirit that they need to recover and thrive. And I mourn with them for their lost loved ones. Aloha.

This new correspondent is showing "green shoots" of her own. She makes it easy to understand and relate to the anguish and challenges of life resuming on Maui, especially in Lahaina.
