Dr. Bob is a lot like I am, we have done things, all kinds of things, in all kinds of places and situations, from stringing razor wire in three feet of water in monsoons, to cleaning up the debris from the packinghouse in Cedar Rapids, to running a gas cutting table cutting steel a foot thick! Coming from a country school as the only left handed kid and the only one in my grade, with out houses, and learning from each other. Survive is also a theme I hear loud and clear, losing your job through a lay off, being married to the wrong person and having a son who gets ripped away to Arizona and left with a house to pay for, and child support to pay and no money coming in for lights and gas and food! Simply to get to the point of paying the house off, getting back to work, and making everything work with no money continues to come back to me at 75 while I pick up beer cans to create money for causes, the same as I used to do to feed myself! Last year it was $2,000 that I collected by dumpster diving and ditch walking! You can't believe what $100 will do to a food bank, or a political candidate, or water project to clean up our water! It's only 2,000 cans and you are cleaning up places and doing good things at the same time! Do what Bob tells us! Get out there and do something, no matter how small!

Bob's energy is powerful in both writing and speech, creating a presence that maintains engagement throughout. Politicians can take a lesson. And Bob, never too late to run for office.

His genuine passion converts his life experiences and knowledge into practical efforts for creating a safer world. His approach uniquely combines analytical rigor with emotional intelligence, simplifying complex issues without oversimplification.

Bob's philosophy centers on proactive responsibility—knowledge creates an obligation to act. He demonstrates that safety requires continuous vigilance, integrating theory with practical application. I could never have said it better.

Retired individuals like Bob possess a valuable independence from professional constraints, creating both opportunity and moral obligation to speak the truth. Their experience and freedom from workplace politics provide a honest platform for addressing societal challenges. Bob exemplifies how those liberated from professional constraints have a special duty to contribute to conversations about societal well-being. Other contributors to Julie's collaborative share these characteristics.

Journalism schools should retain Bob for regular talks. Now that I think of that, the Writers' Collaborative could serve as a resource for panel presentations at our schools. With the rapid changes in technology, ethics, consolidation and threats to our First Amendment, this panel should be a required course.
