Today is our first ‘Open’ Monday Zoom lunch session where we talk amongst ourselves about whatever is on your mind. I’ll have a few questions prepared, but let’s see where the conversation goes. We can talk about the Iowa legislature, your favorite causes, some place special to visit in the town where you live, and I’ll have a couple of ‘inclusion exercises’ at the ready. I’ll post the audio version in a podcast format, posted on Apple and Spotify. Let’s see what happens.

Rekha Basu and I posted our second episode of the podcast What the hell happened to Iowa? It features conversations with teachers, a public school superintendent, principals and family members who will be impacted by the radical legislation. We’d love to know what you think so far: www.julieandrekha.substack.com
Most of you probably subscribe to the Iowa Writers’ Collaborative roundup column, but if not, check it out. Each Sunday, we send a compilation of our columnist’s work from the week before. We have writers from Davenport, Waterloo, Des Moines, West Des Moines, Jefferson, Bussey, Windsor Heights, St. Ansgar, Boxholm, Storm Lake, and more. This week, Pulitzer Prize winning commentator Art Cullen commented to our columnists after the compilation was posted Sunday: “Hey dudes, there’s a lot of good stuff going on there.”
Indeed.
I must say, I am so excited to have some great times reading the many and varied writers of Iowa! I use this as a treat to myself whenever I need a quick pick-me-up or have a few spare moments to R E A D!
I have been addicted to reading ever since
I grew up on Cottage Grove Avenue sitting on the floor of our our upstairs hallway reading library books or even The Books of Knowledge from the hallway bookcase. I had a library card and my bike frequently carried me to a nearby public library in the Uptown Shopping Center on University Avenue...I love to read and always will!
