If you are a paid subscriber to any of the columnists in the ranks of the Iowa Writers’ Collaborative, you are invited to join a call today at noon with a gaggle of our members.

Robert Leonard
will be the moderator, and several of our writers plan to be on the call.

We hold these on the last Friday of the month and invite our paid subscribers to join the conversation. The link is below the paywall at the end of this column.

Why pay for this when you can get it for free? Good question. Since I took down the paywall over a year ago for the Monday podcast calls, paid subscriptions leveled off. There is a high renewal rate, however, but if there is no incentive or push to become a paying subscriber, why bother?

I want you to know those funds help support about 30 individuals who attend the Okoboji Writers’ and Songwriters’ Retreat. I award partial and full scholarships both on merit and need. So, when you become a paid subscriber, you’re helping change a life, because the retreat can do just that. And, to be honest, it is also affirming of what we are doing here in this space.

Here is an example of the power of connection that can take place during the retreat. One of our speakers last year was an Emmy Award-winning producer for CBS News. During the retreat, he met a young Spoken Word poet, Caleb Rainey, who is a magical wordsmith and touches everyone he meets.

On Monday, September 23, our participants will experience the premier showing of a documentary Nik Heftman created, to be held in the Lakes Art Center theater.

And that is just one of over 300 stories that can be told about the impact of the retreat.

You, dear paid subscribers, support this kind of transformational work.

With this film, many more will learn about Caleb Rainey, The Negro Artist, and Iowa City poet.

Thank you so much.

We have had a couple of cancellations, so there is still room for you to enroll in this year’s retreat. It will be the best one yet! Learn more:
