The Iowa legislature, Kim Reynolds, and more
...to be discussed by reporters Laura Belin and Ed Tibbetts
Heads up: Laura Belin and Ed Tibbets will be our Monday Zoom Lunch guests. Their decades-worth of experience covering Iowa politics means they have the background to help us understand what we citizens could be in store for in the upcoming legislative session. The future of public schools and the towns still have them are on the line. Here is the link for this coming Monday, January 16: MONDAY ZOOM
Try it; you’ll like it.
Although the Monday Zoom lunch sessions were created as a perk for those who become paid subscribers to this Potluck column, I will eliminate the paywall for this critical discussion so all can experience this unique reader-engagement experience. We average 25-30 participants in an interactive hour with a notable guest. Maybe you’ll like what you see and join us down the road. No pressure.
Last Monday, Jerry Crawford gave us a candid, insiders perspective on owning horses competing in major horse races, including the Kentucky Derby. Below are videos of six important races where his organization had an entrant. We played the video clips, then Crawford talked about the race, the horse, and the business side of the sport.
Our Iowa Writers’ Collaborative columnist, John Naughton, wrote this story for The Des Moines Register when Crawford’s group, Donegal Racing, had a fan favorite in the 2015 Kentucky Derby: NAUGHTON, DSM REGISTER. And, for current weekly columns by Naughton, subscribe here: My Life in Color.
I am starting to award scholarships for the Okoboji Writers’ Retreat thanks to our paid subscribers to this column. We have five emerging journalists already enrolled, and a promising writer was introduced to us by Mary Swander through her Emerging Voices column. We look forward to having D.J. Savarese, whose first column gave us a perspective on what it is like to have autism, in his piece, ‘The Only Neuro I Know.’
Again, thanks to those of you who support this effort. The diversity of participants enriches the experience for everyone involved.
Okoboji
If you are interested in attending the Okoboji Writers’ Retreat, please enroll as soon as possible. We are almost half full and had to close enrollments each previous year. So, don’t procrastinate. Your fee is refundable (less service charge) until September 1.
I heard from someone yesterday who said the enrollment button didn’t work on her browser. If that happens, let me know in the comment section below, and I will reach out to you.
One of my favorite writers, Robert Leonard, wrote this column after attending his first OWR last fall:
Try this: OKOBOJI WRITERS’ RETREAT ENROLLMENT

2. Dullahan, Blue Grass Stakes
