Rural Iowa, the day after a soaking rain.
We’re taking the day off—so no Zoom call today.
Friday and Saturday were packed with learning and laughter as 27 members of the Iowa Writers’ Collaborative gathered at the historic Hotel Manning in Keosauqua. We came together to bond, share best practices, and learn from one another in a truly special setting.
Our next gathering is planned for July 25–26 in Winterset. On the 26th, we’re excited to invite our paid subscribers to join us for a showing of Storm Lake, the documentary featuring our own Pulitzer Prize-winning member, Art Cullen. There will be a Q&A with Art following the showing of the film in the Iowa Theater.
, , and will be our Madison County hosts.Meanwhile, Dudley braved his first two nights at a lovely boarding facility in Eddyville. He seems to have survived the separation—and yes, we were refreshing the boarder’s website obsessively for glimpses of him frolicking with his new friends.

We’ll be holding these annual retreats around the state. It’s a great way for folks to get out of their respective home zipcodes and see parts of Iowa they might not have visited before.
If you have a suggestion for our next location, send me a message. We’ll need a meeting room with good Wi-Fi, rooms for 30-40, a bucolic setting, and a good group rate.
The Iowa Writers’ Collaborative has added an iconic figure in Iowa journalism, Rick Morain. He lives in Jefferson, and was one of the first potential members I reached out to when we began this project.
and Mary Riche finally persuaded him to join us, and I am delighted.IWC
Also, in the Sunday Roundup yesterday,
has a lovely tribute to the community leader Jay Byers on the news of his untimely death last week. You’ll find a ton of great content. One of our newer members, , has terrific stories about area business. Of course, we have some of the best political analysts in the country as members of the Iowa Writers’ Collaborative. If you need a bit of relief from the news, we’ve got you covered there, too.
Tell a friend? It’s how we grow.
Sounds like the continuous stream of various forms of rain did nothing to dampen your atmosphere. Amazing how combining good spirited people can bring light to a room or gathering. A candle loses none of its glowing energy by lighting others. You can almost taste the light captured in the pictures of conversations between your colleagues. Everyone looks engrossed in the moment. That’s not a retreat. That’s an advance!
Looks very lush and marvellously green ! If we had grass like that ( we don’t ) the wallabies would descend en masse and devour every last green blade !!!
