Steven Mazie, The Economist

...decline of democracy, a family mantra and the necessity of hope

Des Moines native Steven Mazie was our guest on Monday. In addition to teaching at Bard College in New York, he covers the U.S. Supreme Court for The Economist magazine.

Mazie opened our session by acknowledging that July 11 would have been his mother’s 90th birthday. She fled the holocaust and came to Mason City at the age of 16. In her final days, Ingrid Mazie passed on words of wisdom to her family that has become a mantra, and he keeps her words in mind as the nation is amid democracy in peril.

Watch the discussion. It is chilling. Democracy is in peril.

The Monday Zoom Lunch sessions are a premium feature for the Potluck column paid subscribers. The participants are as interesting as the guest speakers. Future speakers include Mayor Frank Cownie, romance novelist Leigh Michaels, Tom, and Ruth Harkin, and many more.

This is the first time I have included the video of the call to the full subscriber list. Future and past videos will be sent to those who subscribe to the premium service. We started this a month ago and already have over 100 paid subscribers. Proceeds fund the Okoboji Writers’ Retreat scholarship fund, which will make a real difference for emerging writers. If you have an issue subscribing and would like to do by check, PayPal, Zelle, or Venmo, email: julieokobojiwriters@gmail.com.

Next Monday will be an open discussion (once a talk show host, always a talk show host, I guess). Or, I will have a mental health expert talk about the psychological impact these national issues have on us.

Whether you become a Zoom subscriber or not, my gratitude for you being a part of this tribe is immense. Thank you for reading, sharing, and commenting.
