Author Jean Logan wrote a book about the history of Broadlawns Medical Center, which employs between 1200 and 1600 people and is considered one of the largest employers in Polk County. It is funded through public (property tax), insurance, and private sources.

Jean Logan is a nurse, researcher, and educator who served two six-year terms on the Broadlawns Board of Trustees and was twice elected chairperson. She taught nursing at Grand View for 33 years and helped design the Caring Curriculum, which influenced the title of the book Broadlawns: A Century of Caring. This is her first book of nonfiction. Previously, she published the Billy Love historical fiction series.
