New Subscribers: Welcome! On Monday, we hold a Zoom call with a guest of note and any of our subscribers who care to join the discussion. This one-hour call is then uploaded as a podcast and made available on this Substack platform and on other podcast resources. We have smart guests and participants, so join the growing number of listeners to find out what’s going on around here.
Liz Garst was just a kid in September 1959 when her grandfather hosted Soviet leader Nikita Kruschev on a visit to their family farming operation in Carroll County, about an hour and a half drive from Des Moines.

This was a major international event, made even more dramatic because the U.S. government was not too keen on having the leader of a country considered an enemy of democracy roam around America’s heartland.
It is fascinating to hear her tell stories about this major news event from a kids' perspective. She will share some of those stories on our Monday Zoom Potluck call.
However, her main mission these days is to sound the alarm about Iowa’s dwindling topsoil and what it means for the future of agriculture and those who rely on food. Ahem, that is all of humanity, of course.
Liz Garst is one of Iowa's most interesting and influential leaders in the state, both in subtle and not-so-subtle ways.
Join us to learn more, starting at noon on Monday, June 24.
