I’m in wow.
, the newest Iowa Writer’s Collaborative member, will be a doozy. Here is her introductory column:She is our featured guest today, so tell anyone you know who loves the following to tune in starting at noon: Reporting from Quiltropolis.
Quilting
Winterset
Starting a museum/gallery
Restoring a treasured movie house
I first met this powerhouse through our mutual friend, Jerry Parkin, who also lives in Winterset. He reached out last November, saying I must meet Marianne Fons and why not come to town and join them for lunch. I understand it was his wife, Randall’s idea, but she couldn’t join us that day.
The location is a lovely 45-minute drive from our place in Des Moines. Fall is miraculous around the area, known for covered bridges; Johnny Appleseed, John Wayne, and Oprah visited to interview Robert James Waller, author of The Bridges of Madison County.
Marianne Fons lives in Winterset, close to the town square, and is playing a role in making this county-seat town a mecca for quilters everywhere. This isn’t a singular endeavor, as others are involved. Still, she brings a national brand to the project thanks to the television show she and her then-partner hosted about quilting and the offspring businesses and best-selling publications they spawned and sold.
If ever there was an example of how one person with leadership skills can make a difference, Marianne Fons is it. I assume she’ll be writing about what’s happening in Winterset, including the restoration of the Iowa Theater. So, I recommend you follow her if a piece of your heart will always be claimed by a small town somewhere.
We met at the Delirium Gallery, 112 Court Avenue, which was a delight. It is part gallery and bistro. Our pal Jerry just sat back and smiled when we got to the connection process.
Join me at noon on Monday, May 27, and let’s get to know Marianne Fons together.

Next Monday, our guest is Polk County Attorney Kimberly Graham.
