is an accomplished explorer, photographer, and environmental advocate. He gained international recognition for his historic sailing expeditions through the Arctic and the Northwest Passage, where he became the first American sailor to document the journey in photographs. His experiences navigating some of the world’s most remote and fragile ecosystems have not only informed his artistic work but also fueled his activism for a more sustainable planet.Thoreson joined the Iowa Writers’ Collaborative last week. His storytelling emphasizes the urgent need to address climate change, drawing from firsthand encounters with melting polar ice and the impacts of a warming planet. In addition to his photography and public speaking, Thoreson has authored books and contributed to environmental research, partnering with organizations like the Climate Reality Project and the Ocean Foundation.
