One thing I know for sure, I am too old to be opining on the future of the Democratic party in Iowa. And so are most of the folks doing just that.
I believed it was possible that a majority of voters would repudiate those who shaped the current Supreme Court and who make nice with TFG (the former guy). After all, he (TFG) orchestrated a government coup on January 6, that resulted in defenders of the United States Capitol building being killed and injured. Blue lives matter, right? Seemed reasonable that Iowans would feel that’s a line that shouldn’t be crossed.
I also thought it possible that women and young people would turn up at the polls in droves, undetected by traditional pollsters. Turns out, I had the correct sentiment, just the wrong state.
Shows what I know. Not much.
Gen Z, where are you? Who are you?
I’ll stay in my lane here in Potluck land. You might need to remind me a time or two.

Mark your calendar for the next two Monday Zoom Lunch calls:
November 14, Shark Tank entrepreneur Raquel Graham will take us behind the scenes of landing a spot on the popular television show and how it’s changed her business. Is Mr. Wonderful wonderful?
November 21, J. Ann Selzer, a renowned pollster, will be our guest. What in the world is happening in the world of polling? Does she have a secret sauce?
Also, I’m working on holding a couple of potlucks around the state and locking down speakers for the Okoboji Writers’ Retreat (OWR). Also, the Iowa Writers’ Collaborative is adding new columnists regularly. Check out our latest humorist, Fern Kupfer, and her husband, Joe Geha. Fern and Joe, launched this week.
Let me know if you’re up for putting on a potluck in your town.
Reminder: Paid subscribers to our Potluck column will receive a link to the Monday Zoom discussions. They take place from noon to 1 p.m. on some Mondays. Proceeds provide scholarships to OWR III.
In closing this chapter of his life, Franken cited the motto of the USS Winston S. Churchill, the ship he commanded:
In war: Resolution. In peace: Good Will.
From the epigraph of Churchill's The Second World War
So disgusted with the politics in Iowa. And so disappointed that there are still people who do NOT exercise their right to vote when so many people have fought and died for it, especially the women. I don't think the young people of this day and age perhaps are aware of what they stand to lose? Or maybe I am out of touch? Have I become an old fogey ? Jeez, I hope not. You say so perfectly what so many of us are thinking. We are all hoping for brighter times ahead. People somewhere somehow sometime have just got to wake up and stop drinking the Kool Aid or whatever it is. My grandparents and parents would not believe what the politics in America looks like at the present time. Thanks for being a voice for so many of us Julie!!!! LQ
Your writing is always wonderful to me, and this one made me cry. Love you, Sister dear.
