Our Monday Zoom Lunch guest will be Des Moines native Steven Mazie.
We exchanged emails the other day, joking about whether we’d have anything to discuss. Ahem, Mazie covers the U.S. Supreme Court for The Economist magazine.
A Des Moines native and Brooklyn resident since 1999, Mazie graduated from Roosevelt High School in 1989. He holds an A.B. from Harvard College and a Ph.D. in Political Science from the University of Michigan and focuses on questions at the intersections of political, moral, and legal theory.
Since 2012, Mazie has also been the Supreme Court correspondent for The Economist, where he has written hundreds of articles, including a cover story on the Supreme Court's legitimacy crisis on May 6, 2022.
Mazie regularly appears on radio and podcasts, is the author of two books (Israel's Higher Law: Religion and Liberal Democracy in the Jewish State; American Justice 2015: The Dramatic Tenth Term of the Roberts Court), and has published widely in academic journals including Perspectives on Politics, Polity and the Law Journal for Social Justice. He also has published op-eds and essays in outlets like the Boston Globe, Slate, Time, SCOTUSblog, the Washington Post, and the New York Times.
Let’s welcome Steve Mazie to our Monday Lunch Zoom bunch. Paid subscribers will get a link to the Zoom session the morning of the session.

I want to introduce you to a new Substack columnist from Bussey, Iowa. Robert Leonard, is the news director of radio stations KNIA-AM and KRLS-FM in Marion County. He has written for the New York Times, the Kansas City Star, and The Atlantic magazine.
As legacy newspapers cut back on Opinion, I am making it a personal mission to encourage strong, local writers to amplify their voices through Substack. Stay tuned for more information about an Iowa Writers Collaborative in formation.
Here is his inaugural column about being ‘woke.’
