First, I am thrilled to announce the formation of the Iowa Writers’ Collaborative Politics Panel, comprised of political analysts who are members of the collaborative and Kathie Obradovich, Editor-in-Chief of Iowa Capital Dispatch.
Political commentators with a long career in broadcast news, political reporting, and commentary will discuss what is going on in Iowa today. The podcast will be produced twice a month, and then, from September through November, it will be held weekly.
It will be supported by generous Benefactors.

Potluck Zoom Sessions for July
I’m taking the day off from our Monday Zoom Potluck call today. Here is the schedule for the remainder of July:
July 8 - Justin Roberts, singer/songwriter with a huge following among children and their families. He’s been nominated for Grammy awards, and has a mystical charm with young and old alike. If you have any kiddos in your world, have them join the call!
July 15 - is the former metro editor of the Chicago Tribune and former Sunday editor of the Chicago Sun-Times. He is the co-author of eight books on history and photography. Twitter: @markjacob16 Threads: markjacobnews https://substack.com/profile/25404939-mark-jacob
July 22 - will be our guest as we celebrate the launch of her new memoir.
J. Dudley Gilbert
For your amusement,
pens a column under the name J. Dudley’s World. He’s had more near-death experiences than I can count, some real, others fantasized in his head as he faces the unknown. The post below is an example:Okoboji - it’s not too late to sign up for the Okoboji Writers’ and Songwriters’ Retreat. You’ll get a free bag. Have a lot of fun. Learn a bunch. And, I predict count the two and a half days immersed in good conversations, a sunset cruise on the Queen, as one of your all time life highlights.
Don’t be afraid to come! All skill levels are welcome. If an 11-month-old puppy can write, by golly you can too!
For the pros and semi pros in the writing community, there are dozens of workshops and resources designed for you, too.
Do it!
Iowa Writers’ Collaborative Roundup, June 30, 2024
I compile the IWC Roundup on Saturday and early, early, early Sunday morning, and could not be more proud of each and every member of this group. The sum of the whole is spectacular. Read the most recent roundup and you’ll understand.
We started this three years ago to be additive in the local news and commentary offerings here in Iowa. We want you, the reader, to support every form of independent journalism that you can afford, including legacy media in your area. Especially, legacy media when you can.
This is not a competition. In fact, through our alliance with Iowa Capital Dispatch, our commentary can be made available to local newspapers at no charge; other than a requirement, there is a link back to the author’s column on Substack.
None of us are getting rich doing this. However, in some cases, the supplemental income is a lifeline for writers trying to survive in a changing industry when Walmart, Dollar Stores, and Amazon have replaced the local advertisers that kept small newspapers afloat. Pick the writers you like and pay for their work if you can afford to. It’s important.
You will also notice we make it free to subscribe. That’s so we can get this news and information out in the state and connect us again as a community.
We are growing, thanks to YOU.
You. You. You.
