Let’s have some fun.
As most of you know, a long time ago - before WHO-AM radio took a hard-right turn- I was the morning talk show host from 8:30 a.m. until 11:30 a.m.
It was an open call-in show, which I auditioned for at the encouragement of my radio predecessor, Susan Bray. I showed up with a hangover and was hired. Me—no radio experience…thirty-something…
Surprising, indeed, considering I had a phobia of public speaking.
It was a bumpy, wild ride for the first six months.
Open shows were unpredictable. I’d come up with some topics - in contemporary parlance, they are called ‘inclusion exercises’ - and relied on WHO listeners from across the state to call in.
We are having an open show today due to a mix-up on my end. Today’s speaker, musician/songwriter Justin Roberts, will not appear as announced and has been rescheduled for July 29 because he is booked into a recording studio today.
I suspect we’ll have plenty to talk about without Justin, but I promise not to resort to asking the question I seemed to never be able to live down from years past:
‘If you were an animal, what kind of animal would you be?’
In my defense, the telephone lines lit up like a Christmas tree. I heard from wanna-be eagles, bears, horses…you name it…and each caller had a story about why.

I would be a cat. Can be lazy, playful and affectionate.
Loved hearing more about your radio post. And the animal question made me laugh!
